387 Ormeau Road, Belfast
I was extremely excited to try 387 Ormeau Road in Belfast. It’s owned by a local health food shop and a lot of my friends and acquaintances have been absolutely raving about it.
When there’s that much hype around a place, I guess hopes are raised. And it’s a bit disappointing when you finally get to try there and … are just a bit underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong – the food was good. It wasn’t great, but it was good and I left full. The atmosphere and staff were friendly and helpful.
I had two types of sandwiches: a NY Deli toasted sandwich which had meat free salami, dairy free cheese, mustard, pickles, and tomatoes. It was delicious, though a little bit lacking in filling. The other was a chickpea “tuna” sandwich, and what the NY lacked in girth, this made up for. The two bits of bread were jammed so full of mashed chickpeas it was hard to get my mouth around it. That fishy taste was missing and it could have been a bit moister, but overall the two sandwiches were tasty enough. I also split an Asian satay salad that had big chunks of tempeh and cucumber in it. This was delicious actually. It was my first time trying tempeh and I was indeed a fan.
The coffee was… interesting. It tasted like warm beer though. I thought at first it was because it was an oat milk latte, but I looked around the cafe cum health food shop and couldn’t see any brand of oat milk I haven’t used before. It was the beans. As you first bring your latte glass towards your face, that unmistakable yeasty, brewery scent hits you straight from the crema. And it doesn’t go away. For the entire latte, I just felt I was drinking warm beer. It wasn’t necessarily unpleasant, but I don’t know if I’ll be rushing out to get a coffee from there again.
Some other neat points about 387 Ormeau Road is that there is a small retail section for health and vegan foods including chilled and frozen items. There is also a plethora of homemade vegan desserts – if I wasn’t so full from all of the food I’d scarfed I would have loved to indulge in something sweet. These temptations might be the only thing that would make me want to go back.
