Espresso Embassy, Budapest

Budapest is home to some of the best coffee roasters and cafes on the planet. While I didn’t get to try nearly enough of them, I’m so glad that I experienced Espresso Embassy. Located in the Inner City, not too far from the banks of the Danube, with big black shutters covering an inviting, yellow exterior.

The atmosphere inside was friendly and upbeat with the general feeling of coffee snobbery all around. It was perfect. The low, brick ceilings, communal tables, and green plants all added to a cosy atmosphere that I could (and did) easily spend an afternoon in.

My friends and fellow digital nomads had secured a long table at the back of Espresso Embassy and it was filled with various laptops, tablets, and coffees by the time I arrived. Literally filled, there was at least 10 of us! Free WiFi was offered along with plenty of accessible power sockets.

Specialty Coffee

I took one look at this hipster haven and decided right away I wouldn’t be having my usual flat white or latte and would treat myself to a pour over. Some of my favourite, locally roasted, beans by Casino Mocca were on offer on brew and also for retail. Trust me, I would have bought a bag if I had brought my trusty AeroPress along on my travels!

Easily the best decision I could have made.

The pourover was brought over by a barista and was a gorgeous dark amber colour- perfection. Delightful smells of burnt nut wafted my way as I poured it, causing me to dance the happy coffee dance. I was so excited to drink this!

Light citrus notes combined with burned almond led to a full-bodied brew that was easy to drink, delicious, and almost refreshing. It was the perfect pick me up to get me through a course I’d been sorely neglecting. Time well spent and enjoyed.

I would also note that I tried a single shot espresso as well and really struggled to drink it. It was overextracted, bitter, and overall unpleasant. I wouldn’t order a single espresso again, but the rest of my table really enjoyed their milky coffees – and latte art was on point!

Vegan Food

If you’re vegan, I would go here for delicious coffee but there weren’t any vegan treats to be had. There were gluten free and dairy-free sweet options, but nothing that was vegan. My friends confirm wholeheartedly though that the non-vegan sweets were delicious, though!

To make up for not having any vegan sweets, I did buy a freshly pressed green juice. Sure it’s not *quite* the same, but damn, it was delicious!

The staff at Espresso Embassy were very friendly and knowledgeable about coffee. I did have a great talk with a barista who told me about the coffee culture in Budapest, some of the local roasteries, and confirmed what I could see of a passionate, thriving desire to produce impeccable coffee. Espresso Embassy’s countless Barista Championship trophies are also proudly on display!

Well done, guys, and thanks for the enjoyable afternoon. I would definitely come back for a coffee!
